Ottawa Construction Company Fined $70,000 After Backhoe Hits Worker

A Ottawa Construction Company was fined $70,000 after a backhoe struck a worker exiting a portable toilet. The court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act.

Section 23(1)(c) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires a constructor ensure that on a project it undertakes, workers’ health and safety is protected.
