According to a survey conducted by Forum Research, 1 in 2 Canadians have experienced bullying in the workplace. In general, older employees have experienced more bullying than younger and those that self identified as disabled had experienced the most bullying.
However, only 1 in 3 employers took action to end the bullying. Buy not taking action, these employers are making a potentially expensive mistake.
In Ontario, the Occupational Health and Safety Act mandates that employers take preventative measures and educate employees with anti-bullying and harassment policies. These policies should set out the types of behaviors that constitute workplace bullying and harassment, and explicitly state that these behaviors will not be tolerated.
Should bullying or harassment happen, employers must be ready to investigate and respond. A delayed response or botched investigation could create expensive legal problems.
